What I’m Reading This Week : December 8, 2021

Greetings and welcome to another episode of the Crank File. Every Wednesday is new comic book day, and on Tuesdays I get to spotlight some of the stuff I’ll be checking out:

Here’s what I’m reading this week:

The Top of the Pile: Devil’s Reign #1 (of 6)

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Chip Zdarsky
Art: Marco Checchetto

What it is: The story that’s been building for years is here! Wilson Fisk went from Kingpin to mayor of the biggest city in America and is going to bring his full criminal and political power to bear on the super heroes who call NYC home. The man who once destroyed Daredevil has set his sights on The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and more. And since it’s Fisk, once he takes them all down, you know he’s going to sign it. CROSSBONES! TASKMASTER! TYPHOID MARY! SHOCKER! WHIPLASH! RHINO! KRAVEN! Fisk has an ARMY of super villains at his command – and this is just his opening salvo. For years, Fisk has waited for his time to strike, and YOU WON’T BELIEVE the aces he’s got up his sleeves!

Why we love it: Chip Zdarsky has taken some huge swings during his Daredevil run. Matt Murdock’s in jail, Kingpin is the mayor, Elektra’s Daredevil, dogs and cats living together… Mass hysteria! It all comes to a head tonight!

The Mainstream One: Batman #118

Publisher: DC
Words: Joshua Williamson
Art: Jorge Molina

What it is: • New creative team! Start of a new story arc as Batman leaves Gotham! “Abyss” part one! As Gotham celebrates surviving Fear State, Batman retreats alone into the darkness. But when he learns of a mystery involving Batman Inc., it forces the Caped Crusader to leave Gotham for a brand-new adventure! Thrills, chills, and international intrigue await! The Dark Knight begins a new story with superstar artist Jorge Molina and new writer Joshua Williamson!

Why we like it: Every new era of Batman starts with a new writer and Joshua Williamson is an interesting pick. International intrigue you say? Jorge Molina’s art is amazing and always worth checking out.

The Indie One: Made in Korea #6 (of 6)

Publisher: Image
Words: Jeremy Holt
Art: George Schall

What it is: PROXY RETURN FAQS •A child can be returned within 90 days of receipt of delivery. •It can take up to 25 days for a child to reach us. •It takes 3-5 business days for the refund to be processed. •If you return a defective, damaged, or incorrect child, your refund will be denied.

Why we like it: Oh this series. I am excited to see how this ends, but also sort of terrified. If you haven’t been reading Made in Korea, pick it up when it comes out in trade paper back and you can thank me later.

The #1 One: One-Star Squadron #1 (of 6)

Publisher: DC
Words: Mark Russel
Art: Steve Lieber

What it is: Who you gonna call? One-Star Squadron! Meet DC’s superhero team where heroism meets capitalism. This ragtag group of heroes led by Red Tornado is here to provide service with a smile. All you must do is send a request via their on-demand hero app and they’ll answer any call. Whether it’s a children’€™s birthday party or an alien invasion, no job is too small or too big! Brought to you by Eisner nominee Mark Russell (The Flintstones, Wonder Twins, Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles) and Eisner winner Steve Lieber (Superman’€™s Pal Jimmy Olsen), you’€™ll want to invest early in this one-of-a-kind miniseries that promises a story filled with heart, heroism, and humor.

Why we like it: This oddball premise sounds like the perfect book for Mark Russel. It’s nice to read a comic book that just sounds weird and fun.

The One I’m Buying for the Cover: X-Men Legends #9

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Larry Hama
Art: Billy Tan
Cover Art: Kaare Andrews

What it is: FATAL FOUR WAY! WOLVERINE vs. LADY DEATHSTRIKE vs. OMEGA RED vs. SABRETOOTH! This is the showdown you’ve waited decades for, brought to you as only the legendary Larry Hama can! RATED T+

What it is: I first started getting into comics in the 90’s and this cover art is giving me serious nostalgia hits. I think it’s foil and/or chromium too.

That’s all I got this week. Until next time, carpe comics!
