What I’m Reading This Week: June 30, 2021

Greetings comic book fans and welcome to another episode of the Crank File. Every Wednesday is new comic book day and on Tuesdays I like to spotlight some of the stuff I’ll be checking out.

It’s the dreaded fifth Wednesday of the month. Usually it means annuals and one shots and filler issues, but apparently Marvel missed the memo because it looks to be a pretty good week for new books. Here’s what I’m reading this week:

The Top of the Pile: Beta Ray Bill #4 (of 5)

Publisher: Marvel
Words and Art: Daniel Warren Johnson

The penultimate chapter of Daniel Warren Johnson’s righteous Horse-Thor epic! When Beta Ray Bill’s quest brings him and his friends – Skurge the Executioner and Pip the Troll – to the fiery realm of Muspelheim, they are quickly attacked by horrible monsters and dark beings! To save his friends, Bill must journey through a maze of his own memories! 32 PGS./Rated T+

NEW STORY ARC ‘Wait. No. Hold on, what is this? Why is CHIP writing my book? Sorry, I know this is unprofessional to do in public, but no one at Image is answering my emails. Someone please call me!! WHAT IS HAPPENING?!’

The #1 One: United States of Captain America #1

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Christopher Cantwell, Dale Eaglesham
Art: Josh Trujillo, Jan Bazaldua

The shield has been stolen! No one understands the value of the shield like those who’ve wielded it, so Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson set out on a road trip across America to chase down the thief. But instead, they find the Captains, everyday people from all walks of life who’ve taken up the mantle of Captain America to defend their communities. And for some reason, the shield thief wants them all dead. Can Sam and Steve get to them first? Christopher Cantwell and Dale Eaglesham lead a can’t-miss miniseries to celebrate Captain America’s 80th Anniversary, joined by a rotating series of creative teams to tell the stories of each new Captain-starting with Aaron Fischer, the Captain America of the railways, brought to life by Josh Trujillo and Jan Bazaldua! 40 PGS./Rated T+

The One I’m Buying for the Cover: Spawn #319

Publisher: Image
Words: Todd Mcfarlane
Art: Carlo Barberi
Cover Art: Bjorn Barends

This is where it all starts, folks! This month in the pages of SPAWN #319 we plant the ‘seed’ that will grow into the new SPAWN’S UNIVERSE: #1 (also available this month)! Yes, the publishing world of SPAWN is officially expanding! And this is the jumping-on point for new readers! New threats, new allies, and more importantly new titles!

That’s all I got this week. Until next time, carpe comics!
