The Crank File: What I’m Reading This Week – December 23, 2020

Greetings comic book fans and welcome to another episode of the Crank File. Every Wednesday is new comic book day and on Tuesdays I like to spotlight some of the stuff I’ll be checking out.

Here’s what I’m reading this week:

The Top of the Pile: King in Black #2 (of 5)

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Donny Cates
Art: Ryan Stegman

What it is: HAIL TO THE KING! Rated T+

Why we love it: The first issue of the King in Black did not disappoint, and things are looking horribly grim for the Earth’s greatest heroes. Donny Cates bringing the awesome as usual.

The Mainstream One: Batman Superman #15

Publisher: DC
Words: Joshua Williamson
Art: Andrei Bressan, David Marquez

What it is: Solomon Grundy died on a Sunday! But when this monster man kicks the bucket, all hell breaks loose! When the body of Grundy begins to break down, so begins a toxic time bomb that could wipe out half of North America! It’s up to the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight to get Grundy from S.T.A.R. Labs to Slaughter Swamp before the clock hits zero…but with a horde of super-villains all looking to snag the sizzling super-titan for their own nefarious ends, our heroes had better move quickly!

Why we like it: Joshua Williamson may be one of the best writers currently at DC. This idea of exploring what happens when an immortal like Solmon Grundy finally dies and sort of goes super nova is so fresh and interesting.

The Indie One: Gideon Falls #27

Publisher: Image
Words: Jeff Lemire
Art: Andrea Sorrentino

What it is: SERIES FINALE ‘THE END’-The mind-bending conclusion to the Eisner Award-winning series by New York Times bestselling writer JEFF LEMIRE and artist ANDREA SORRENTINO (the creative team behind Green Arrow and Old Man Logan), with the talents of Eisner Award-winning colorist DAVE STEWART! An oversized (80 page!) giant of a story where all the universes of ‘Gideon Falls’ finally converge. Can the combined forces of this rag-tag band of adventurers be enough to stop the Laughing Man and his limitless legions of evil?!

Why we like it: This is such a great horror book, one of Jeff Lemire’s best in years. I’ve been waiting for this series to end so that I can binge read it in trades. Just in case anyone was wondering what to get me for Christmas I still need volumes 5 – 7.

The #1 One: Star Wars Adventures Smugglers Run #1 (of 2)

Publisher: IDW
Words: Greg Rucka
Art: Ingo Romling, Alex Worley

What it is: After the Battle of Yavin, Han Solo and Chewbacca intend to use their reward to settle their debts. But Princess Leia asks them to accept a secret mission for the Resistance. Mortal dangers, traitorous enemies, and thorny situations mark the path of these two heroes of the Star Wars saga.

Why we like it: Bridging the gap between New Hope and Empire Strikes back, this series will fill that Mandalorian sized hole in your life for a little while.

The One I’m Buying for the Cover: Spawn #313

Publisher: Image
Words:
Todd McFarlane
Art:
Carlo Barberi
Cover Art: Bjorn Barends

What it is: ‘CULT OF OMEGA,’ Conclusion-The FINAL confrontation: SPAWN vs. OMEGA SPAWN to the death! If this villain cannot be defeated, then the fabric of time will begin to tear and out will pour the savage warriors of Heaven and Hell upon Earth. TODD McFARLANE and CARLO BARBERI conclude their gut-wrenching story of SPAWN vs. OMEGA SPAWN.

Why we like it: Merry Christmas everyone!

That’s all I got this week. Until next time, happy holidays and carpe comics!
