The Crank File: What I’m Reading This Week – July 1, 2020

Greetings comic book fans and welcome to another episode of the Crank File. Every Wednesday is new comic book day and on Tuesdays I like to spotlight some of the stuff I’ll be checking out. This is shaping up to be a pretty slow week for new comics, as there were no new releases from DC or Marvel. So prepare for lots of indie titles and if you’re like me, take this as an opportunity to dig around the back issue bins.

Here’s what I’m reading this week:

The Top of the Pile: Negan Lives #1

Publisher: Image
Words: Robert Kirkman
Art: Charlie Adlard, Dave Stewart

What it is: The greatest f*@king comic book villain of ALL-TIME returns. ‘Nuff said.

Why we love it: To help support local comic shops, Robert Kirkman dropped a surprise epilogue issue of Walking Dead. As I understand it, in a show of support for the comic retailer community, 100% of the revenue generated from the sale of this book will go to the shop selling it. That is an incredibly generous act by the Walking Daed creative team, and you can do your part in supporting your LCS just by going out and buying this book on Wednesday.

The Mainstream One: None

Publisher: None
Words: Nobody
Art: Seriously Nobody

What it is: There are literally no new releases from Marvel or DC this week.

Why we like it: We hate it.

The Indie One: Breathers #3

Publisher: It’s Alive
Words and Art: Justin Madson

What it is: The story of Breathers follows a small cast of individuals as they struggle to make sense of the dystopian world they live in, as a virus is unleashed into the air, rendering it deadly to humans. Among them: a detective whose addiction to the drug known as ‘Filter K’ takes over his life; a brother and sister who, due to recent events, start to wonder if the air really is deadly, or if it’s all just a conspiracy; a mother and daughter who will do anything to keep their family together; and a breather salesman who is looking to make amends for his past mistakes. They are all survivors of this virus-plagued world. They are all ‘breathers.’

Why we like it: This series was written well before the current pandemic hit, so pretty interesting how close to home it hits.

The #1 One: Fire Power #1

Publisher: Image
Words: Robert Kirkman
Art: Chris Samnee

What it is: SERIES PREMIERE! ALL-NEW monthly series created by ROBERT KIRKMAN and CHRIS SAMNEE! The one who wields the fire power is destined to save the world, but Owen Johnson has turned his back on that life. He doesn’t want the power-he never did. He only wants to spend time with his family and live his life, but unseen forces are at work to make that impossible. Danger lurks around every corner as Owen’s past comes back to haunt him.

Why we like it: A preview of this new series from the superstar creative team of Kirkman and Samnee was originally supposed to be given away on Free Comic Book Day. Well FCBD was cancelled, so now we get to pay full price for the first issue. Eat my butt coronavirus.

The One I’m Buying for the Cover: Kidz #4

Publisher: Ablaz
Aurelien Ducoudray
Jocely Joret
Cover Art: Esdras Cristobal

What it is: Brooks decides it’s time to break out the heavy firearms. Ben, Polly, and Puffy go on a mission of their own that results in a sincere heart-to-heart… and the whole KIDZ crew takes a trip to the abandonded ‘Super Toyz’ retail store for what should be a super fun time… but turns into something else entirely

Why we like it: Jaws homage for the win.

That’s all I got this week. Until next time, carpe comics!
