Greetings comic book fans and welcome to another episode of the Crank File. Every Wednesday is new comic book day and on Tuesdays I like to spotlight some of the stuff I’ll be checking out.
Here’s what I’m reading this week:
The Top of the Pile: Darth Vader
Words: Greg Pak
Art: Raffael Ienco
What it is: THE FACE OF THE QUEEN! In the wake of the shocking revelations of The Empire Strikes Back, DARTH VADER continues his quest for revenge against everyone who hid his son Luke from him. But when his search takes him deep into his past, he uncovers a hauntingly familiar face that will challenge everything he knows. Rated T
Why we love it: Taking bets on who is this Padame looking character that showed up on the last page of issue #1. Has Padame been resurrected? Did she never die? Is she a body-double? Long lost twin? LMD? I’m placing a large wager on clone, but either way I’m totally intrigued.
The Mainstream One: Thor #4
Words: Donny Cates
Art: Nic Klein
What it is: THOR’S GREATEST ENEMY – AND THE UNIVERSE’S ONLY SAVIOR – REVEALED! The Black Winter is coming – the end of the entire vast universe – and only one entity can stop it. The only one who has survived it before, Galactus the World-Eater, has come to Midgard in search of a herald for the end of everything. Rated T+
Why we like it: I can’t recommend this series enough. If you haven’t yet, go out and read the first three issues of this series and I promise you will not be disappointed.
The Indie One: Decorum #1
Words: Jonathan Hickman
Art: Mike Huddleston
What it is: SERIES PREMIERE! There are many assassins in the known universe. This is the story of the most well-mannered one. ‘Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what knife you use.’
Why we like it: A great creative team always gets a look from me, and this story sounds like classic Hickman. I just hope that it doesn’t get bogged down with delays (East of West) or outright dropped (Dying and the Dead) now that Hickman is the full time creative lead on all of Marvels’ X titles and writing the flagship X-Men series.
The #1 One: Stealth #1 (of 6)
Words: Mike Costa
Art: Tamra Bonvillain, Nate Bellegarde
What it is: SERIES PREMIERE! For decades, Stealth has waged war on crime in Detroit, but now he’s taken his pursuit of justice too far. Only reporter Tony Barber knows that behind Stealth’s reckless behavior is an older man battling Alzheimer’s-his father. A father unwilling to accept that he’s no longer the hero this city needs with enemies all too eager to force his retirement. Created by ROBERT KIRKMAN and MARC SILVESTRI, STEALTH is an action-packed series, perfect for readers who enjoy Black Panther and Iron Man.
Why we like it: There was a time when Image published mostly super-hero series. But by 2010 they had shifted their focus away from capes and tights to incorporate more sci-fi and horror titles. The move was hugely successful and you really don’t see many superhero comics coming from Image nowadays, so it’s nice to see them getting back to their roots.
The One I’m Buying for the Cover: Sta Wars Bounty Hunters #1
Words: Ethan Sacks
Art: Paolo Villanelli
Cover Art: Kaare Andrews
What it is: NEVER BETRAY A BOUNTY HUNTER – ESPECIALLY IF IT’S BOBA FETT! Years ago, VALANCE and fellow bounty hunters BOSSK and BOBA FETT took on a mission that went sideways in a bad way after Valance’s mentor, NAKANO LASH, violently betrayed them. Valance’s team barely escaped with their lives. He never thought he’d face his old mentor ever again until Lash finally resurfaces under mysterious circumstances. Every bounty hunter in the galaxy wants a piece and Valance is hell-bent on getting to the prize first. He has score to settle-but so does Boba Fett! ETHAN SACKS (OLD MAN HAWKEYE and GALAXY’S EDGE) and PAOLO VILLANELLI (VADER: DARK VISIONS and JEDI FALLEN ORDER – DARK TEMPLE) are teaming up to bring you the bounty hunter adventure you’ve been waiting for this March! Rated T
Why we like it: This sweet Boba Fett cover is the cherry atop of this week’s Star Wars sandwich. And I have no clue what kind of sandwich has cherries.
That’s all I got this week. Until next time, carpe comics!
