The Crank File: What I’m Reading This Week – October 23, 2019

Greetings comic book fans and welcome to another episode of the Crank File. Every Wednesday is new comic book day and on Tuesdays I like to spotlight some of the stuff I’ll be checking out.

Here’s what I’m reading this week:

The Top of the Pile: Immortal Hulk #25

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Al Ewing
Art: Joe Bennett

What it is: GROUNDBREAKING DOUBLE-SIZED ISSUE! • You’ve never read a Hulk comic like this before. You’ve never read a Marvel comic like this before. • The heat death of our universe has come and gone. The Hulk is finally dead. Now, billions of years later, the Ninth Cosmos cowers… • …before the BREAKER OF WORLDS. Rated T+

Why we love it: Immortal Hulk continues to be Marvel’s best ongoing series in 2019 and shows no signs of slowing down. This standout series is well on its way to becoming a classic.

The Mainstream One: The Amazing Mary Jane #1

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Leah Williams
Art: Carlos E. Gomez

What it is: SPINNING RIGHT OUT OF THE PAGES OF AMAZING SPIDER-MAN! ‘YOU JUST HIT THE JACKPOT!’ ALL-NEW ONGOING SERIES! The web-head’s favorite redhead (and yours!) is taking a chance on her dreams. But if you’ve read ASM #25, you’ll know MYSTERIO is behind Mary Jane’s big shot, and someone worse is behind him! What’s real and what’s illusion, what’s illusion and what’s Hollywood phoniness? This fall, Leah Williams (AGE OF X-MEN: EXTREMISTS; GIANT MAN) and Carlos Gomez (UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL, Red Sonja) bring you all this intrigue plus more action, glamor, grit, and – we’ll say it – sass than anyone’s previously dared fit in five fabulous issues! Face it: you don’t wanna miss this! Rated T

Why we like it: 55 years since first appearing in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel’s favorite side piece finally gets a turn to be the leading lady in her own ongoing series. Could make for a nice change of pace read.

The Indie One: Beyond the Demon, the Sea

Publisher: Source Point Press
Words and Art: Ben Templesmith

What it is: This horrific love story is unlike any comic you’ve read! Follow one man’s story of his tragic journey across the sea, told through a gorgeous sequence of artwork hand painted in the style of classic nautical tattoos.

Why we like it: Just in time for Halloween, Ben Templesmith crafts an unconventional tale of terror told through his uniquely macabre art style.

The #1 One: Marauders #1

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Gerry Duggan
Art: Matteo Lolli, Russel Dauterman

What it is: THE X-MEN SAIL AT DAWN! Even in this glorious new dawn, Mutantkind faces hardships and oppression from their human counterparts. Led by Captain Kate Pryde and funded by Emma Frost and the Hellfire Trading Company, Marauders Storm, Pyro, Bishop and Iceman sail the seas of the world to protect those hated and feared! Rated T+

Why we like it: More pirates! The X-Men set sail for some high seas adventures. And if Captain Kitty Pride can’t keep her crew in check, she could be facing a mutant-ny. Har!

The One I’m Buying for the Cover: Wonder Woman #81

Publisher: DC
Words:
G. Willow Wilson
Art:
Xermanico
Cover Art: Jenny Frison

What it is: Olympus has been returned to the gods! Now that the deities of Diana’s world are back in power, all of her troubles are over. Or are they? Using the welcome distraction, Cheetah has finally made her way to her final destination for destruction: Themyscira!

Why we like it: Diana’s determined gaze and posture is bathed in the golden glow of her swirling lasso. Awesome colors, balanced composition. No lie, my favorite Lasso of Truth cover of all time.

That’s all I got this week. Until next time, carpe comics!
