The Crank File: What I’m Reading This Week – July 10, 2019

Greetings comic book fans and welcome to another episode of the Crank File. Every Wednesday is new comic book day and on Tuesdays I like to spotlight some of the stuff I’ll be checking out.

Here’s what I’m reading this week:

The Top of the Pile: Wolverine and Captain America Weapon Plus #1

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Ethan Sacks
Art: Diognes Neves

What it is: THE SECRET HISTORY BEHIND THEIR ORIGINS REVEALED! In 1940, scientists attempted to make a man into the perfect weapon, a Super-Soldier. They failed and made him a legend instead. Before the turn of the century, they tried again for the tenth time. They failed, making a man into death incarnate. At long last, ETHAN SACKS (OLD MAN HAWKEYE, STAR WARS: GALAXY’S EDGE) and DIOGENES NEVES (GREEN ARROW, DEATHSTROKE) reveals the shadowy connections between Captain America, Wolverine and many more of the Marvel U’s Super-Soldiers… including some surprises! The conspiracy begins here!

Why we love it: New surprises could mean new subjects of the ultra-secret Super-Soldier Weapons program, so keep an eye out for first appearances here. Did you know that the X in Weapon X is actually the Roman numeral ten? So I guess that makes Captain America Weapon I, which would have been a way cooler code name for Cyclops.

The Mainstream One: Superman #13

Publisher: DC
Words: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Ivan Reis

What it is: Superman, intergalactic hero! A major chapter in the galaxy-spanning ‘Unity Saga’ begins as Superman reluctantly takes the lead in a quest for peace bigger than he has ever tried before. It’s Superman, Superboy, Supergirl and a cast of thousands in a fight to keep the universe intact. But it’s this issue’s final page that will have fans everywhere talking. It’s a moment almost a thousand years in the making… Deadly plans, murderous schemes and evil dealings. Each of Lex Luthor’s offers means doom for the heroes. So why is Lex now talking to Lois Lane?

Why we like it: Writer Brian Bendis’ tenure at DC has been both a critical and commercial success, and his Superman series have been the heart of his master plans. Excited to see what the big reveal they are teasing is. Picking this up and flipping right to that last page.

The Indie One: Black Hammer / Justice League : Hammer of Justice #1

Publisher: Dark Horse
Words: Jeff Lemire
Art: Michael Walsh

What it is: DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics present the ultimate superhero crossover event of 2019! A strange man arrives simultaneously on Black Hammer Farm and in Metropolis, and both worlds are warped as Starro attacks! Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, and more crossover with Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, and the rest of the Black Hammer gang!

Why we like it: I’ve lauded Black Hammer as the best comic about superheroes that is actually not a super hero comic. In one of the strangest crossovers in memory, the Black Hammer universe collides with the DC universe for a distinctly more traditional super hero story which will surely subvert all expectations.

The #1 One: Invisible Woman #1

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Mark Waid
Art: Mattia De Iulis

What it is: Fresh from the pages of FANTASTIC FOUR, for the first time Susan Storm-Richards stars in her own limited series – and the secrets about her past revealed therein will shake readers’ perceptions of the Invisible Woman forevermore! Years ago, she undertook an espionage mission for S.H.I.E.L.D. – and now it’s up to her to save her former partner from death at the hands of international terrorists!

Why we like it: Sue Richards, possibly the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four and one of the founding characters of the entire Marvel universe, debuted in 1961 and is only now getting her own solo series. The First Lady of Marvel is finally getting some much deserved time in the spotlight with this spy thriller. Espionage seems like such a natural fit for her power set, it’s hard to believe that this story hasn’t been told before.

The One I’m Buying for the Cover: Star Wars #68

Publisher: Marvel
Words:
Greg Pak
Art:
Phil Noto
Cover Art: Kaare Andrews

What it is: REBELS AND ROGUES! ‘The evil lord Darth Vader, obsessed with finding young Skywalker, has dispatched thousands of remote probes into the far reaches of space…’ That’s right – you remember the opening titles of The Empire Strikes Back. Now find out what happened just before, as Luke and his friends launch a desperate, three-pronged mission of deception to keep the Empire from finding their new rebel base in a brand-new epic from the new ongoing team of Greg ‘PLANET HULK’ Pak and Phil ‘POE DAMERON’ Noto! Featuring Han and Leia undercover in a noir world of romance and danger! Luke and R2 facing off against the Executor in a single X-Wing! And Chewie and Threepio, the greatest team-up you never knew you always needed!

Why we like it: I know.

That’s all I got this week. Until next time, carpe comics!
