The Crank File: What I’m Reading This Week – March 27, 2019

Greetings comic book fans and welcome to another episode of the Crank File. Every Wednesday is new comic book day and on Tuesdays I like to spotlight some of the stuff I’ll be checking out.

Here’s what I’m reading this week:

The Top of the Pile: Detective Comics #1000

Publisher: DC
Words: Peter J. Tomasi
Art: Doug Mahnke

What it is: After 80 years, it’s here-the 1,000th issue of DETECTIVE COMICS, the title that literally defines DC! This 96-page issue is stacked with an unbelievable lineup of talent that will take you on a journey through Batman’s past, present and future…plus a sensational epilogue that features the first-ever DC Universe appearance of the deadly Arkham Knight! But who is under the mask? And why do they want Batman dead? The incredible future of Batman adventures begins here!

Why we love it: Detective Comics turns 1000 this week. It’s a big deal for DC even if Batman didn’t make his first appearance until issue 27, but whatever. Happy one thousand Tec. To celebrate we’re getting variants, a whole series of variant covers representing every decade of Batman’s history. There’s an Alex Ross Tec 27 swipe that’s a beauty, but the Jim Lee wrap around is my favorite.

The Mainstream One: Hulkverines #2 (of 3)

Publisher: Marvel
Words: Greg Pak
Art: Guiu Vilanova

What it is: SLASH AND GRAB! The Hulk is already on Weapon H’s tail – but now Wolverine is involved. And he’s got an Adamantium-laced bone to pick with Weapon H. But they’re not the only monsters coming for Clay. The Leader and Dr. Alba meet at last – and the result will transform the course of Clay’s entire life. Weapon H veteran Guiu Vilanova returns with the second installment of a classic clash in the making! Rated T+

Why we like it: The three way battle we’ve been waiting for since we first met the Hulkverine starts now. Place your bets folks.

The Indie One: Spawn #295

Publisher: Image
Words: Todd MacFarlane
Art: Jason Shawn Alexander

What it is: Spawn comes face-to-face with his wife’s killer. This begins the final reckoning that will culminate in the 300th issue!

Why we like it: Spawn has been on a great run for the last year. Looking forward to the lead up run to 300.

The #1 One: Sabrina the Teenage Witch #1

Publisher: Archie
Words: Kelly Thompson
Art: Veronica Fish

What it is: BRAND NEW SERIES! Sabrina is a teen witch who’s struggling with balancing the double life of high school and her burgeoning powers. Newly relocated to Greendale with her aunts Hilda and Zelda (also witches), Sabrina is trying to make the best of being the new girl in town which so far includes two intriguing love interests, an instant rivalry, a couple of misfits that could turn into BFFs, and trying to save the high school (and maybe the world) from crazy supernatural events. NBD!

Why we like it: Riding the success of the darker comic and Netflix series Chilling Adventures of, Sabrina returns with a new title, an all-star creative team and possibly the best Adam Hughes cover I’ve seen in years.

The One I’m Buying for the Cover: Doctor Strange #12

Publisher: Marvel
Mark Waid
Barry Kitson
Cover Art: Jesus Saiz

What it is: After the incredible #400, Doc is finally face to face with the man who controls Earth’s magic!
What chance does Strange have against a foe who can literally turn Strange’s spells off?! Rated T+

Why we like it: Needs more Galactus and less Strange.

That’s all I got this week. Until next time, carpe comics!
